What I Did is forthcoming in Mars Review of Books on November 30, along with highlights for the month ahead. In the meantime, here’s what’s happening: Tuesday, November 26 - I’ll be spending my last full day in New York before holiday travel at The Morgan Library’s new Franz Kafka Exhibition . This exhibition is on view through April 13, 2025 , accompanied by a series of lectures, tours, and additional programming on topics like The Kafkaesque , Kafka’s Last Trial , and Kafka and Vagabonds . - Afterwards, I will be going to Luna Luna at The Shed. Honestly, I don’t really expect to like this very much after seeing photos from the opening, but I bought the accompanying art book almost two years ago when the project launched, and the whimsical nature of a Hamburg 1987 art amusement park is something I’d be chagrin to not see for myself, even restored, even in Hudson Yards. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern was one of my favorite childhood novels, and continues to be a book I revisit often. In my wildest dreams, this is what one might find at Luna Luna. The Night Circus Paper Project by Valentine Callais

It was a great party, and it’s a wonderful book (available for purchase ) I will be in Williamstown, Massachusetts for Thanksgiving this weekend. The Berkshires remain one of the most special places in the world — I made a list of places I want to show my boyfriend while we are there, which I will put below for viewing pleasure and travel purposes: - MASS MoCA : My favorite contemporary art museum in the world - putting aside the strength of programming (and the programming usually is pretty strong), the architectural space, lack of crowds, and integration with landscape and nature that Mass MoCA boasts is unparalleled. The museum is located in a converted Arnold Print Works factory building complex, and much of the art is site-specific to the bones and scale of this structure. The permanent (and/or very long term) exhibitions are worth a visit alone - Anslem Kiefer , James Turrell , Sol Lewitt , etc. - Clark Art Institute : Another wonderful and architecturally integrated museum in a pastoral setting. This weekend, I hope to see Abelardo Morell: In the Company of Monet and Constable - Thomas Cole National History Site : Technically located in NY State (meaning this isn’t strictly a guide to Massachusetts / Berkshires but I digress). This is a very lovely historical home in the Catskills that (again) incorporates the natural landscape of the surrounding area into exhibitions and preservation. I visited an exhibition I loved here in 2022, pairing Marc Swanson’s contemporary work with Thomas Cole’s historic landscapes. - The Porches : A nice and relatively new boutique hotel and restaurant on the MASS MoCA campus, where each room is located in an individually restored Victorian row house. I’ve never stayed here, but I have been for drinks. There is an outdoor pool that is heated year round, which is my favorite possible amenity for a hotel to have. - Pine Cobble : A wonderful hike - Colonial Alpaca : A farm in the woods with alpacas for visit, and alpaca wool socks and gloves for purchase. While you unfortunately can only buy the winter-wear in person, it seems that you can purchase a live alpaca of your own online. Recently sold: Colonial Arcani - a real winner! Colonial Arcani.
