WHAT I DID Monday, October 7 I want a feast of the fall tonight. Moon in Autumn. I saw that written on a billboard and I wrote it on my palm in pen. I washed my hands. I don’t want to be bored. I don’t want to agree with everything I’m told out of habit. We walk to Entwine in the West Village just after dusk. It’s farther from the apartment than I realized by map, but the walk is nice. There’s a lot of windows open over the streets tonight, and I stop to peer into the only half obscured interior of a brick house, big cream curtains, a long blue velvet staircase that ascends into something out of sight. I don’t usually crave exorbitance, not really at least, and this house is spectacular. I’m surprised then by my intense desire to live here. The concept feels strangely fathomable from the street. Simple. There’s something so sweet in looking in. There’s something in tonight that feels very warm. Entwine, when we arrive, is nice. Cozy. It feels spooky, which I’m glad for. We order toast with mushroom and goat cheese, manti dumplings in yogurt in a little ceramic cup, dips and pita bread and a drink that looks milky and another that is watermelon and then three vodka sodas for me, probably more for the table. A true feast of the fall, I think. I haven’t craved hedonism lately, but I’ve craved some things like this. Tuesday, October 8 On Sunday, I created problems, and so today, I create repairs. The morning goes well. The fire alarm goes off at Equinox and so I’m forced from my Sterile Eucalyptus Bliss by circumstance. I arrive at the Sovereign House Anti-Canada party a little late (6pm) (the party started at 3.) “Oh, look, the people who have jobs have arrived,” someone says when I walk in. “I don’t have a job,” I say. “The problem with afternoon parties is that the people who have jobs can’t go, and people who don’t have jobs can’t get out of bed before 8pm,” he says. “It’s 6pm,” I say. Some girls standing behind the bar are asked to move to the main room, and so I slip into their spots in the newfound emptiness. I sit on the floor so I am hidden from view and continue reading Christopher Zeischegg The Magician . I’ve been reading it for a while now. At the Anti-Canada Propaganda party, I’m reading it for the second time. I’m trying to write a review. I’ve been having sleep paralysis most nights lately, and the book is starting to feel nightmarish. At Sovereign House, someone peaks over the edge of the bar, presumably looking for fallen white claws or more bottles of wine. They startle when they see me. “Oh look, a hobbit,” they say. I nod. Someone else comes out from the back room, and encourages me to join the group for speeches. The Anti-Canada Party is not actually an Anti-Canada Party, but a going away party for a girl who being deported to Canada. I remain crouched behind the bar, but I can hear Nic Dolinger’s speech that ends in song - some parody of the Canadian national anthem. Afterwards, a young man I haven’t seen before approaches Nic sweaty and nearly shaking with anticipation. “I fucking hate readings man but that was incredible,” he says. “No shade to the other speeches but that song, I was half listening, half paying attention and then… oh man, you’re good!” People are starting to filter back towards the bar, and people are starting to ask me what I’m reading. I pour a glass of red wine even though I’m allergic. I walk over to Dimes To Go to meet Shannon. Purchase gluten free bread. Sharp cheddar. Wednesday, October 9 The best balance of life is days that feel good and full, and then nights that feel fun but not consuming. I go to Cafe Reggio in the morning; one of the best places to spend a good day. I sit outside for a while, there’s a nice breeze, the walking tours are quiet when they pass, the homeless man accepts my refusal to share a cigarette and leaves, there’s a feeling of something sacred at Reggio, which I’m aware sounds silly and trite. When I get cold, I move inside. The tenebrist art hanging is old, I can’t remember the artist, my boyfriend says he’s surprised no one has stolen it yet. He says we should consider stealing it. I get a black coffee in a huge ceramic mug, My boyfriend gets a banana pineapple milkshake, buffalo chicken wings, iced cider, and a glass of milk. Thursday, October 10 There’s a lot to miss today, and a lot that therefore, I do miss when my plans go awry. Beverly’s reopened and there’s ambient music sets down the street and there’s a few gallery meetings, a communist meet up at Sovereign House . I tell my friends I’m on my way, and then a few hours pass. I’m listening to autotuned country rap hybrid music by the artist Shaboozey on repeat in the apartment. I’m finding myself moved by ideas like Cowboys Never Die. My boyfriend makes me a glass of Rittenhouse Rye neat. So many directions a night can take. Sitting on the terrace. Settling on this one. Friday, October 11 On the drive to the airport, I start to feel terrible, and then I start to almost cry. I clench my eyes shut tightly so that the jolting of the car against the wavering horizon of the city will stop bobbing up and down in front of me and cure my nausea. My obscured vision does little to help. I can see little blue dots and rings bouncing in my field of vision. It looks like an eyeball. I clench my eyes tighter. I’m inside my own head and I can see my own eyeball. I walk to the bathroom to recuperate my vision and strength when we arrive at LaGuardia. I set my suitcase on the floor in the bathroom stall and then perch precariously on top of it like I chair. I hear a mother talking to her toddler son in the stall over. “We’re not car sick anymore,” she says. I take the woman’s manifestation in stride and will the matter of fact assertion in her statement to apply to me, too. Nobody knows I’m listening. In a few moments, everything will be fine. WHAT YOU SHOULD DO Tonight : Monday, October 16 From 6:30pm at Time Again — Lj Almendras hosts a pop-up with bar snacks and bites that preview his forthcoming debut restaurant.
