What I did: Dienst & Dotter, SARA’S at Dunkensthalle, Knickerbocker Bar & Grill What you should do: Devil’s Workshop, TENSE, Blade Study, Jack Skelley Myth Lab Thanks for reading Chloe Pingeon’s Substack! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. WHAT I DID Monday, June 24 I buy my mother a children’s book for her birthday at Dienst & Dotter in the West Village. The store is on a block I don’t visit often and the exterior is a little cold and a little vacant and a little reminiscent of a high end frame shop, but I’m pleasantly surprised inside. We’re the only people in the store and everything is all dark Scandinavian wood and tables from the Middle Ages and towards the back there’s a corner of paintings and chairs and a long rug that I want to preserve in exaction and transport to a home. The design feels liveable. Practical, almost, despite the mysticism engrained in the craftsmanship and the age of the pieces on display. The children’s book I buy my mom has a hard teal blue cover and a gold feather inside and an inscription and half the writing in English and then, if read from back to front, half the writing in French. I buy it because the illustrations remind me of my favorite book The Wind Boy which is the most beautiful book in the world, and also because fairytales are a more beautiful thing to collect than coffee table books in general. After, I’m at Lafayette Bakery because it’s empty on a Monday morning, although it’s not very good and so I don’t know why there are ever lines at all. Later, I’m at Le Dive for one margarita right before they close. In between, it’s so hot and everything is so slow and the hours are running circles and circles around each other. Tuesday, June 25 Too hot for steak, but I go for dinner at Knickerbocker Bar and Grill anyways. Knickerbocker is not the only steakhouse in New York , but it is the best. It’s better in the winter, but it’s good now too. Ordering: sea bream, salad, steak with creamed spinach and fries and onion rings. Bartering diet coke with my sister in exchange for promises to help move the dead trees off my roof. I’m making a list of restaurants that are actually special in New York because I hated Bar Pitti so much. My list is pretty small because I pretty much only like places that are cozy and that serve roast duck, but Knickerbocker makes the cut. Knickerbocker is number one. Wednesday, June 26 The heat wave is making everything languid and slow. I wake up at six and then again at ten and then I’m walking on the treadmill writing out MY AMBITIONS. I’m making sure my plans are very precise. Later, I’m sitting in Washington Square Park eating birthday cake kitkat, blueberries, diet pepsi. I’m feeling really into things like central AC and Stanley Cup tumblers and IHateIroning NYC pay-for-pick-up laundry lately. I’m quenching the heat with aesthetic decay. Thursday, June 27 I’m reading for Perennial NYC on Ellie’s roof uptown and I’m reading the same story I always read lately which means it’s probably time for some new material, but I like reading it here. Later, I’m driving back downtown to Strange Party #1 and then Strange Party #2. There’s another party after that is less strange and that is full of my friends, but I’m going home instead. Friday, June 28 I’m waking up ill but I recover by noon. Evening, I’m walking to SARA’S at Dunkensthalle for the opening of NADJA . It’s a group exhibition presented through the lens of the Andre Breton novel. I arrive after the performance element of the evening, but rumor has it there was blood. Dunkensthalle is small, and I really like how the exhibition fills the space - not cramped, not empty. I want to read NADJA now. Perhaps the best Surrealist romance ever written, it says on Amazon. After, I’m walking to The River (closed, private event) and then I’m walking to Time Again for the afterparty for SARA’S and also for two other galleries, although I’m not sure which ones. Time Again is packed and it’s illuminated red inside and I can see sardines on baguette being piled high on the counter, but when I order the sardines and a paloma I am told the kitchen is closed. That’s ok. I’ve never been here before and I like it. I’m sitting outside on a stool that it clearly made to hold drinks and not people. Someone brings me a chair, and so then I’m sitting in the chair. People are talking about Berlin and I’m tempted to say that this bar reminds me of Berlin but I don’t because it’s annoying, and also because I don’t know if that’s really true. I never really miss Berlin, but I do sometimes miss being alone in a city that is sprawling.
