After moving to NYC, I noticed something that bothered me. In my view, the people who were doing the most innovative, meaningful, and truly transgressive work were not among the handful of names that seemed to garner the most attention. Let’s just say…the cream was not rising to the top. (Sorry, but you’re not gonna catch me reading a book titled My First Book unless it was written by someone in the single-digit age range.) The artists and writers I admired most were relegated to the underground and, in some cases, subject to censorship or hasty dismissal by traditional media outlets. They were not ‘press-ready,’ armed with MFAs and weaponized decorum. They were not adept at glad-handing or crafting an email (and why should they be??).
